Photography

I've always enjoyed photography, but working for consumer product manufacturers opened up a whole new world of possibilities. From the basic "white background" product shots, to real-world "lifestyles", I've got the technical know-how and creative vision to plan, shoot, and edit great photos for use in print & web.

LIFESTYLE PHOTOGRAPHY

Lifestyle photography shows products in real-world usage making it easier for potential customer's to envision themselves using them. While working for Dee Zee, our clientele consisted of everyone from construction workers to weekend warriors. I worked triple-duty on these shoots organizing the truck builds, models (if needed), and locations. On shoot day, there I was behind the lens, setting up flashes as needed, etc. Back in the studio, I used Adobe Lightroom & Photoshop to polish them up for use on the company website & other advertising needs. Since I've been working with Railroad Sock, I've been able to continue utilizing this skills, albeit on a smaller scale (socks & mannequin feet vs. pickup trucks). It has been fun studying fashion photography trends and applying my experience to a sock company that didn't have any lifestyle type photography when I joined them (Spring 2023).

STUDIO PHOTOGRAPHY

Just as important for showcasing products is studio photography. Properly lighting products on a crisp backdrop gives customer's an idealistic vision of what they're purchasing. It's also perfect for close-ups of details and textures. At Dee Zee, through years of trial & error, I helped push the studio production quality forward using strobes, white curtains (to cut down on reflections), and a DIY turntable making it easier to shoot all angles – and in some cases full 360ºs.

Now, working remotely for Railroad Sock, I've set up a small photo studio in my basement. This includes an overhead professional studio light (on a boom arm), bounce boards, a white backdrop, and a motorized 360º photo turntable. And it is all shot in Raw on an older consumer grade camera (Canon T3i), proving it isn't the tools that make great photos - it's the person using them. (That said, I'd love to get the chance to learn to shoot in a professional studio environment.)

HOBBY PHOTOGRAPHY

I love to travel to beautiful & historic places and as a photographer, it presents me with opportunities to document my explorations. Or just humble brag about my latest projects. Follow me on Instagram to see what I'm up to lately:
